EPA directs nearly $1B for electric school buses

The EPA on Wednesday announced $965 million in grants for electric school buses, the first of a five-year, $5 billion program for zero-emission school buses.

The grants will go to 389 school districts spanning all 50 states, the District of Columbia, several Native American tribes’ lands, and United States territories, the EPA said in a press release, adding that the grants will help these school districts purchase over 2,400 electric buses.

The EPA laid out details for the $5 billion program in May, and in September it effectively doubled the first-year funding, which had originally been set at around $500 million. School districts receiving this funding were selected via lottery. The next round of funding is scheduled to launch in the coming months and will include “an ambitious grant competition,” the EPA said.

Funding for the program comes from the mammoth Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in late 2021. That law also sets aside $7.5 billion toward a nationwide EV charging network, targeting 500,000 chargers.

Sept 2022 Malaysian vehicle sales up 0.15% – MAA

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has released vehicle sales data for the month of September 2022, announcing that a total of 67,659 vehicles were delivered to buyers last month. This is a marginal increase of 99 units from the 67,560 units (originally reported as 66.614 units) sold in August, or an increase of 0.15% in volume.

The association said that the consistent volume was due to car companies continuing to fulfill many of the bookings received before June 30, 2022, when the sales tax exemption ended. The performance last month and also in August indicates that production levels seem to be stabilizing somewhat after a patchy July.

Compared to the same month in 2021, September’s total was 53% (or 23,432 units) higher than the 44,227 units achieved last year. Meanwhile, the year-to-date total industry volume for the first nine months of 2022 was to 516,798 units, which is an increase of 62% (or 197,971 units) from the 318,827 units managed across the same period last year.

The association projects sales in October to be similar to September levels, with car companies continuing to attempt fulfilling the backlog of vehicle orders made during the sales exemption period. With the government’s decision

Jeep 4xe recall, Volvo EX90 battery, Nikola hydrogen stations, Foxtron EVs: Today’s Car News

The 2022-2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is recalled for a battery fuse. Nikola plans to add 60 hydrogen stations with the help of government funds. Foxconn reveals more Foxtron EVs. And we look at why the Volvo EX90 electric SUV will get a big battery pack despite the added carbon footprint. This and more, here at Green Car Reports.

Nearly 14,000 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years have been recalled for an issue with the battery pack’s 200-amp fuse. No fires or incidents have been reported, but the issue it’s fixing might potentially leave some owners stalled.

The upcoming Volvo EX90 electric SUV gets a big battery, so as to balance the needs between EV driving range and bidirectional charging, the automaker explained to Green Car Reports. The EX90 will be ready for AC and DC bidirectional charging, smart charging, and in some markets, home energy management. And with Volvo going all-electric by 2030, expect this to be the leading edge of a whole ecosystem.

Taiwan’s Foxconn, best known as the maker of the iPhone, recently unveiled its first production EV, the Foxtron Model C, due later in 2023. Also shown were two new
